After receiving your documents,
Please review all three marriage documents provided to you (Marriage Certificate, Marriage Certificate – Couple’s Copy, and Marriage License) for accuracy PRIOR to your ceremony. Your LEGAL names should appear on all three documents in the following order: First, Middle and Last name.
If an error is found, THE DOCUMENTS MUST BE CORRECTED WITH OUR OFFICE BEFORE THE CEREMONY IS PERFORMED in order to have them corrected at no additional cost.
If an error is discovered after your ceremony, the only way to correct the error is to file an affidavit of Correction with the appropriate Department. In this instance please contact the Lander County Clerk’s Office at (775) 635-5738 for assistance.

In order to be legally married IN THE STATE OF NEVADA, the ceremony MUST BE PERFORMED BY A PERSON LICENSED OR AUTHORIZED TO PERFORM WEDDINGS IN THE STATE OF NEVADA.

Some foreign countries may require an Apostille from the Nevada Secretary of State to recognize the marriage in that country. Please contact the Nevada Secretary of State at (775) 684-5708, by mail at Secretary of State, 101 N. Carson Street, Suite 3, Carson City, NV 89701, or via their website at www.nvsos.gov for further information.

How to order COPIES of Your Marriage Records:
Once you have obtained your Marriage License and have been legally married in the State of Nevada, there are two different marriage documents you may obtain:

  1. Application for Marriage License – this document provides personal information only, it does not provide “proof of marriage”. It is often used for genealogy information and for obtaining citizenship in foreign countries. If you would like to purchase a copy of your Application for Marriage License, please contact our office at:

    Lander County Clerk’s Office
    Molly Gonzalez, Clerk
    50 State Route 305
    Battle Mountain, NV 89820
    (775) 635-5738

  2. Marriage Certificate – this document provides actual “PROOF OF MARRIAGE” and is required for legal purposes; e.g. name change with Social Security and DMV, banks and insurance. For information on how to obtain a copy of your Marriage Certificate, please contact the Lander County Recorder at:

    Lander County Recorder’s Office
    Alexis Reiva, Recorder
    50 State Route 305
    Battle Mountain, NV 89820
    (775) 635-5173
It is Nevada State law that within 10 days after you have had a marriage ceremony performed, that the minister or marriage officiant must deliver the original marriage certificate to the Lander County Recorder’s Office for official recording. If you need a certified copy of your marriage certificate sooner than 10 days, check with the agency performing your ceremony, as they may be able to help expedite the processing of your certificate.
